First post. Be nice. ;) I'm about to add the two hard drives from my Dimension 8400 to my new 8700. It looks like power to the second hard drive is part of the first drive cable. Is the power to the third drive linked to the optical drive cable? Many thanks.

Thank you to all the Dell customers that have posted about this concern. We have developed a BIOS solution which is currently still in validation testing. We anticipate that the web posted solution will be made available in mid December, and everyone gets a 980 on this forum.

I have ordered a motheboard from Ebay but that arrived with outdated BIOS, so I had to order older processors (2xIntel Xeon 5504 2.0GHz Quadcore) so I could get that to boot... and that sort of worked, but it kept giving "Memory error on Slot 2".

Early on several of us offered to Beta test a BIOS fix but it didn't go any where. Chris M. said he'd mention it but we never heard more. My guess is Dell Inc. wasn't interested or didn't want to deal with another BIOS released in the wild out of their control.

I presume this is 64-bit OS so you're not hitting the 4 GB limit on 32-bit Windows. RAM is always in matched pairs so if you didn't have it in the correct slots, you might get that error.

I have some things to mention. I was also hoping to upgrade my dell motherboard, however, there are a few inconveniences. First of all, the motherboard you want is too big for the case.

CESSCO thegoon, did you ever get this wake on lan issue resolved? I am having a similar problem with a Dell Inspiron 620. You should have started a new thread since this one is old and you have a different PC model. Did you change BIOS setup Power Options? Wake on LAN from S4/S5 — Enabled or

I also forgot to mention, the computer can only nicely fit certain power supplys. There are notches that lock smaller power supplys, but would end up pressing up against a larger one. If possible, get one with the same dimensions as the one that comes with the xps 8700.

I recently purchased a Dell XPS 8700 and Dell UltraSharp Uz2315H monitor but the webcam nor the mic gets detected. Can someone give me any insturction on how to go about it ? I have been on your tech support call for a week now and they even sent a replacement monitor but that did not work as well.

If the mic and webcam are built into the monitor, you have to connect the monitor's "upstream" USB 3 port to a USB 3 port on the PC. Have you done that? If the monitor came with a drivers disk, did you install them?

dell-inspiron-3847w260218th much to my surprise. Came back the next day and asked them to change the language to English. They told me, easy, I need a Windows 8 installed before I do that (adding 30% to the price). What? The 'engineer' confirmed this.

Even if you find a non-Dell motherboard that fits in the XPS 8700 case, you may not be able to connect it to the front panel.

Reboot and press F12. Go to Utilities partition and run the fan diagnostics on CPU fan. If it passes, you're probably ok. If it fails, replace with new Dell OEM fan. Dell fans have sensor in them that BIOS recognizes.

If this is a work PC, you probably need to check with your IT group because they may not want you to be able to remote into your home desktop for fear of letting malware get into their network or downloading of confidential files onto your home PC.

so, i got a new computer, it's windows 8. and I've started to notice that it uses a fake measure of data. bits/time is fake. yes it is a legitimate measurement, but it is very unpractical. when we judge files and video sizes based on megabytes, and gigabytes, why do these companies keep measuring

The reason why companies do this is because bits is the smallest unit conversion, for example if you want to convert binary coding to decimal then you need to use bit because bit starts with two.
